Brutal-ised Birmingham Part One
In 2015 the demolition of two of its best Brutalist buildings begun. Both 103 Colmore Row, and the Old Central Library will be greatly missed.
This Brutal City – New Street Signal Box
Another in the series I’m calling ‘This Brutal City’ – Probably one of the only Brutalist buildings in Birmingham that is currently safe from destruction. The New Street signal Box by Bicknell & Hamilton. Grade II listed and couldn’t be more at odds with the new mirror clad Grand Central Terminal.

This Brutal City – 103 Colmore Row – John Madin
The hoardings are going up and the scaffolding is being erected on 103 Colmore Row… Another one of John Madin’s Brutalist structures is being dismantled. I’m going to miss it. I must have walked past this concrete monolith hundreds of times over the last decade, and it makes me slightly sad that it’s end is nigh.

This Brutal City – Birmingham Central Library – John Madin
Love it or hate it, you can’t help but admire the sheer brutal rigour of John Madin’s Birmingham Central Library, lovingly referred to as the Ziggurat.
This landmark of post war Birmingham is in the process of being dismantled, so before it is lost to history, I thought I’d take my camera out and photograph it while I still had the chance!
